About Bishop Marine Electric

In 1963, Luther “Lou” Bishop, a former member of the United States Navy, established Bishop Marine Electric, Inc. in Miami, Florida. Lou specialized in marine electrical power generation and distribution, thus bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to the marine electronic field.

As the company grew in the next two decades, Lou became involved in numerous facets of the marine industry. He focused on the sales and service of electrical power producing equipment and water desalinization systems on yachts. Lou began building diesel electric plants from 15kW to 30kW and repowered yachts for celebrities like Frank Sinatra.

The company was one of the first to build marine generators with Lima Electric brush-less alternators, a new concept in the industry in the late 1960s.

Greg Bishop began employment with Bishop Marine as an installer in 1980. He then succeeded as president of the company when his father retired in 1983. As competition increased, Greg decided to redirect the company toward the electric side of business.

In 1984, he introduced Variable Frequency Drive to the marine industry. Bishop Marine was the first to use this product for driving AC motors at variable speeds without overloading the motor.

In the last three decades, Bishop Marine Electric, Inc. has been on the cutting edge of the technological era of information. Recently, Bishop Marine has been combining its efforts with Atlas Marine Systems, Inc. and Northern Lights Inc. to manage yachts’ electrical power, monitor all generator engine and electrical data and share that data with yachts’ monitoring systems.

Today, the guiding principles of Lou Bishop continue to guide the company toward excellence and advanced technological enterprises.
